Tesla China to store vehicle data locally while giving drivers access to it

Tesla has alleviated potential security concerns in China by announcing it will store vehicle data locally in a posting on its official Weibo page, a Chinese social media site. Tesla owners will also be able to access their vehicle’s data, according to the company’s announcement.
Earlier this year, it was reported that Tesla’s vehicle cameras and sensors were being subjected to extra scrutiny by some Chinese government officials. A report from Reuters indicated that Tesla vehicles were being banned on State-owned company properties and military bases, and government facilities as some Government employees believed that the cars’ exterior cameras and sensors could be capturing sensitive information and transmitting it to the United States government. CEO Elon Musk later responded to the allegations by stating that if Tesla were spying on China, there would be huge legal implications and that it would never transmit sensitive data to other entities. “If Tesla used cars to spy in China or anywhere, we will get shut down,” Musk said.
As a result of the skepticism, some Tesla drivers who worked at these facilities were reportedly told not to drive their vehicles on company property.
As a result, Tesla announced that it would be storing all data captured from its vehicles in China locally to keep vehicle data security safe.
“We have established a data center in China to localize data storage and will continue to add more local data centers. All data generated from the sales of vehicles in the Chinese mainland market in China,” Tesla said in a Weibo posting. It also stated that it would open a “vehicle information query platform to car owners.”
“This work is in full swing, and the details and progress will be reported to you one after another. Thank you for your support. We will work hard to continuously improve the user experience,” Tesla said regarding the owner information platform. This will allow owners to access data generated by their cars. Sources also told Reuters that Tesla is boosting its engagement with regulators and expanding its government relations team to improve its relationship with the Chinese government.
The advancements in Tesla’s vehicle data security platform could be the result of a think tank between Grace Tao, Tesla China’s VP of External Affairs, executives of Baidu Inc., a Chinese tech company that specializes in Artificial Intelligence, and executives from Alibaba, a Chinese e-commerce platform.
Tesla currently builds the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y crossover in China at the Giga Shanghai production facility. The two vehicles placed second and fifth, respectively, in April registration figures for electric cars. Last year, the Model 3 was China’s most popular electric car.
Tesla Model S Plaid’s instrument cluster to feature a cool Easter Egg

Reports from the electric vehicle community have suggested that the Tesla Model S Plaid’s instrument cluster would have a rather interesting and special Easter Egg—one that would help make the all-electric sedan’s launch feel quite otherworldly.
The Tesla Model S Plaid is the quickest four-door sedan that the EV maker has made to date, and it shows in its raw specs. With three electric motors, a 0-60 mph time of 1.99 seconds, a quarter-mile time of 9.23 seconds at 155 mph trap speed, and 1,020 horsepower, the Model S Plaid is a beast.
With this in mind, Tesla seems to have fully committed to making the Model S Plaid’s launch as cool as possible. As per an individual who was able to experience the Tesla Model S Plaid’s acceleration firsthand, the flagship all-electric sedan’s instrument cluster will feature a “going to plaid” animation when the vehicle is being launched from a standstill.

It’s a small Easter Egg and a fun callback to Spaceballs, arguably one of Elon Musk’s favorite movies, but it is still a great detail nonetheless. In the film, “plaid” was referred to as the speed beyond “ludicrous,” which, of course, was the name of the special mode used by Tesla in its previous performance flagships like the Model S P100D and the Model S “Raven” Performance.
A preview of Tesla’s “plaid” animation was actually seen a few years ago when the next-generation Roadster was unveiled. During the all-electric supercar’s test rides, a “going to plaid” animation could be seen in the new Roadster’s infotainment display. However, it appears that for the Model S Plaid, Tesla changed this a bit by featuring the “plaid” animation in the vehicle’s instrument cluster instead of its infotainment system.
The Tesla Model S Plaid is expected to be unveiled this coming June 3, with CEO Elon Musk announcing that a delivery event will be held at the Fremont Factory. Updates to Tesla’s online configurator point to Model S Plaid orders being delivered next month as well.

Russia woos Tesla as several regions compete for the right to build a Gigafactory
Tesla may still be facing possible delays in Germany due to the wait for Gigafactory Berlin’s final approval, but the EV maker is already receiving a far more welcome landscape in Russia. This was hinted at by several Russian governors following Elon Musk’s recent comments.
The Tesla CEO recently spoke at Russia’s New Knowledge Forum, where he discussed the company’s plans to enter the country. Musk noted that Tesla’s entry into Russia was imminent, and he reportedly remarked that the EV maker is also considering the country as the potential site of an upcoming facility. These comments promptly inspired a series of responses from numerous Russian officials, several of whom were intent on persuading Musk to set up a factory in their respective states.
Vladislav Shapsha, the head of the Kaluga region, immediately posted an invitation to Tesla on his Telegram channel. In his message, Shapsha remarked that Kaluga is completely ready for such a project. “Elon Musk announced the appearance of Tesla production in Russia at the New Knowledge marathon. I propose to open the first plant in the Kaluga region. The region is fully prepared for this,” he wrote.
Shapsha’s invitation soon found company, with Andrei Vorobyov, the governor of the Moscow region, also issuing an open invitation for Tesla and Elon Musk. Posting on Twitter–the Tesla CEO’s preferred platform for social media–the Moscow governor noted that his region would be the best place for a Tesla factory. Vorobyov noted that his region is already experienced with carmaking, especially since Mercedes-Benz already has a facility there.

Not to be outdone, Alexander Brechalov, the head of the Udmurt Republic, posted an invitation on Twitter just minutes after the Moscow governor’s message. In his post, Brechalov noted that Tesla would be receiving tax breaks if the company decides to set up shop in Udmurt instead. He also stated that Tesla would be welcome in Udmurt, the “most entrepreneurial region in Russia.

Yevgeny Kuyvashev, the governor of the Sverdlovsk Region, called the Titanium Valley, a special economic zone in the area, a preferable location for an electric vehicle factory. In a post on Instagram, the governor hinted that Tesla could reduce the cost of establishing a plant in the region by 30%. He also issued an invitation to Elon Musk to attend the Innoprom industrial exhibition in July.
Other Russian officials who opted to not use social media also joined the fray, such as the authorities of the Kaliningrad region, who remarked that they are ready to host the production of Tesla’s electric cars. Dmitry Lyskov, the head of the press service of the regional government, noted that authorities are optimistic about the idea of Tesla setting up a facility in Kaliningrad. Lyskov further remarked that Tesla’s arrival in the region would likely result in more jobs for residents in the area.
The governor of the Oryol (Eagle) Region Andrei Klychkov also issued a statement for the Tesla CEO. Using a bit of symbolism, the Oryol governor noted that the Eagle is a symbol of “fearlessness and a conquest of the peaks,” making it a perfect match for Tesla’s bold and ambitious philosophy. Klychkov also promised that Tesla would receive some “unique and exclusive officers” in logistics and infrastructure if it does establish a facility in the region.
