Wouldn’t it be awful to lose all of your Spotify playlists and songs? That’s why you should back them up while you still can.

By now, you should know that making backups of your data is an essential part of managing your digital life, but perhaps you’ve never really thought about how those best practices extend to the world of digital entertainment.

As a Spotify user, you probably have tens—if not hundreds—of playlists on your account, and those playlists contain thousands of songs. Wouldn’t it be awful to lose it all? You’d never remember all the stuff you’d saved, would you?

Well, thankfully, you don’t have to let it get to that point. You can back up your Spotify playlists using a simple third-party web app called SpotMyBackup.

How to Back Up a Spotify Playlist

To back up your playlists on Spotify, just follow the simple step-by-step instructions below:

  1. Open your browser and navigate to spotmybackup.com.
  2. Click Login with Spotify.
  3. Select Okay to grant SpotMyBackup access to your Spotify account.
  4. Wait while SpotMyBackup scans your account.
  5. Click on Export.
  6. Download the JSON file onto your machine.

You can open the JSON file using a text editor, but it won’t make a lot of sense—the file is full of Spotify track IDs. However, if you return to SpotMyBackup and click on Import, you can add the JSON file to your Spotify account and thus restore your tracks and playlists.

Note: Once you’ve backed up your playlists, you should remove SpotMyBackup’s access to your Spotify account. Log in to the Spotify web portal and go to Apps > SpotMyBackup > Revoke Access. You can re-add it at a later date if you wish.
