United States to Hold Another Semiconductor Supply Chain Conference

U.S. President Joe Biden at his April 12 video conference with global semiconductor manufacturers

The U.S. government is planning to hold a video conference on May 20 in order to tackle the ongoing global chip shortage. Intel, Samsung Electronics, TSMC, GM, Ford, Google and Amazon are supposed to attend the conference.

The U.S. government held the same conference last month and Samsung Electronics attended it. Some are expecting that Samsung Electronics will announce a U.S. investment plan at the second conference to take place one day before the KORUS summit at the White House.

The first conference took place on April 12, presided over by National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and attended by Samsung Electronics, TSMC, Intel Ford, and so on. U.S. President Joe Biden also attended it to call for them to increase their investments in the United States. Before and after the conference, Intel and TSMC promised to make large investments. The fact that Samsung Electronics has been invited to the upcoming conference along with both Intel and TSMC means that Samsung Electronics is under pressure to follow suit.

In the meantime, the summit is expected to cover collaboration for a peaceful and nuclear-free Korean Peninsula, cooperation in economy and trade, joint responses to COVID-19 and climate change, etc.
