Hyundai Motor Group to Launch EV Charging Services in 2021

Hyundai Motor Group will roll out its first electric vehicle manufactured on E-GMP, a production platform for electric vehicles, in 2021.

Hyundai Motor Group, which aims to become a global leader in the electric vehicle (EV) market by 2025, is expected to launch electric vehicle (EV) charging services in 2021 in time for the volume production of a new EV model.

Hyundai Motor registered trademarks for EV mobility services in June, according to the Korean Intellectual Property Office. The trademarks are E-PIT and ION. The planned services are exclusively for EVs: charging reservation, vehicle diagnosis, and charging route services. In particular, they are likely to be accessible through not only mobile devices but PCs.

Industry analysts expect the services to begin in time for the launch of a new EV, which is code named NE, in 2021.

The NE will be manufactured on E-GMP, a platform dedicated to EVs. Hyundai Motor said the new EV model can be charged in 20 minutes, the fastest in the world, and run more than 450 kilometers on a single charge. The new EV and charging services will help Hyundai Motor Group achieve its goal of selling one million EVs and capturing more than 10 percent of the global EV market by 2025.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor is rapidly expanding EV infrastructure ahead of the era of EVs. In 2019, the automaker agreed with SK Networks to build “mobility lifestyle charging stations” by transforming a gas station into a charging space for EVs.

Hyundai Motor is planning to install “High-Chargers,” fast-charging facilities for EVs, at mobility lifestyle charging stations and provide diverse information on EVs to people.

Hyundai Motor Group is also planning to install 350 kWh high-power and high-efficiency super-fast chargers for EVs at 12 service stations nationwide and set up Korea’s first high-speed charging network for EVs with Korea Expressway Corp. by the end of this year.
