Samsung, SK Telecom and Kakao have joined hands to develop cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology.
Representatives from the three giants met at SK’s office in Pangyo south of Seoul on Tuesday and agreed to pursue AI research together.
The alliance is the brainchild of SK Telecom chief Park Jung-ho, who proposed it at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.
“We need to cooperate if we are to gain the upper hand in the global AI race,” Park said at the event.
Samsung has been developing AI for smart devices while SK focused on developing the technology for mobile communications and Kakao for mobile messaging use. The three companies said they aim to combine their shared knowledge to create cutting-edge technology.
Their first joint project is to develop AI to combat the coronavirus pandemic. They plan to roll out a new service in the first half of 2021 alerting people when they come close to coronavirus threats. It will use the schedules, travel and accommodation records and movement data from people’s smartphones.
The three companies also plan to share their core AI technologies with other businesses to create a wider range of services.
